She made an exception for me and we enjoyed them for dessert. I told her that I wanted to try them she told me that she only gets them for breakfast on the rare occasions that she stays out until morning. My first churro experience in Spain was when I visited my Italian friend who is studying in Segovia. This is because people usually eat dinner very late here in Spain. A staff member at CEA told me that churros are usually a snack to hold you over until dinner. I prefer it this way because the chocolate adds all the sweetness you need with a single dip. To my surprise they are often served without sugar which you can put on yourself. That is what I expected before coming to Spain. My dining hall had churro day and they were completely coated in sugar as well. This one in particular was the most similar to the only churro that I have tried in America. Churros may not be healthy, but they are good for the soul every now and then. It gives me heartburn just to think about it. Even though it is not the traditional way that they are served, I had always been curious about these kind of churros. It was one large churro coated with sugar and filled with caramel. I got a single churro in another form for 1.5 euros. My friend purchased 5 churros with a cup of chocolate for 3.50 euros. We stopped at a random place on Carrer d'Aragó called Xurreria Jessy. I have only tried them at the places that have been recommended to me by locals. ![]() Since they are so popular in a touristy area like Barcelona, I have put great value into being picky about the quality. I have only had them a handful of times before, but of course it was a must for the weekend. They are popular in Spain, Portugal, France, the Philippines, Ibero-America and the Southwestern United States. ![]() Churros are fried-dough pastries which are usually served with a chocolate drink here. One of the most popular traditional Spanish snacks are churros. Since this week is finals week, we had to utilize this weekend to take advantage of some of the things we will miss from Barcelona. This passed weekend represents one of the last ones with my friends from CEA. I was so happy to discover that there is a good cause involved in this festivity since it brings in an enormous amount of money. In addition to this initiative, the Escuela Suïssa, Escola Nausica and Institut Menédez Pelayo, as well as the publishing houses Larousse, Barcanova, Casals, Vicens Vives, La Galera, Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial and PANINI have also been added. The donated books were given to FEDAIA, Rueda and Hospìtal de San Juan de Déu to be distributed among the children of the entities and the hospital center on Sant Jordi. People who have participated in this cause have received an iced yogurt in exchange for their contribution. Apparently the initiative has raised about 400 volumes more than last year. This campaign has collected 4,097 children's books for children without resources. Yesterday, La Vanguardia published an article about the success of the campaign 'Per Sant Jordi, cap nen sense llibre' which is promoted by Danone and 8tv. The crowd deterred me from staying too long, but it was a really nice experience. Gelato stands advertised rose flavored gelato and bakeries were filled with a special Sant Jordi bread. The streets were packed and everywhere you looked you could spot a stand selling all different types of books and roses in every form. This Sunday I went to La Rambla which is one of the most popular destinations in Barcelona for people to celebrate. According to legend, Saint George was a soldier in the Roman army who killed a dragon to save a princess. Some women have even reported to demand a book instead of a rose. They give their friends and families gifts. Many Catalan people have told me that it is for everyone. Although it is considered a romantic festivity, it is not as exclusive as Valentine's Day. ![]() The tradition consists of gifts of roses for women and books for men. In Catalonia, April 23rd marks the day to celebrate the patron saint Sant Jordi. This is because the event is compared to the American holiday, Valentine's Day. I first heard about Sant Jordi's Day on February 14th.
